About Canvas Rugs from Laurel's Originals

To provide you with a little historical perspective about canvas rugs the following information was pulled from various resources.

Originating in France, canvas rugs, referred to as floor cloths, were hand-painted and displayed in the homes of the wealthy. The British adopted this art form in the late 1600's and used them as floor art, replicating fancy floor designs. The rugs were often placed under dining tables, referring to them as crumb-catchers.

American settlers also used this art form to cover their wood floors. Because of limited resources they used the worn sails from ships, painted and sealed them.

This art form continues today for those who want a unique expression in their homes that is durable and useful.

In manufacturing ours, we use a heavyweight canvas, hand-painted with high quality acrylic paint and sealed with polyurethane varnish to protect from stains.

The edges are sewn to withstand high traffic and holds its shape for years.

Our canvas rugs or floor cloths, if you prefer, are hypoallergenic; they do not collect dust or sand, and are extremely easy to maintain. Simply wipe down with a mild soap and water. Floor wax may be applied to add to its luster, if desired.

The canvas material lends itself to working well on all types of applications: stairs, tables, porch and patio, living room or dining room, in the kitchen. Just think of all the possibilites!

There are many techniques for painting such as sponging or washes that give a unique finish just as you would on a wall. We use Sherwin Williams paint giving you an incredible array of colors to choose from.
