In the USA and Canada, summer beckons
gatherings on the patio or deck. Here in Costa Rica, many homes include an outdoor living space, often referred to as a rancho,
where family and friends gather to enjoy a meal and visit. I have noticed, however, that many people, here and in the US,
do not utilize their outdoor living space for various reasons: too sunny or hot, too windy, or unsightly décor.
Recently, I wrote an article offering tips for decorating a patio or deck to address these very problems. One suggestion was the use of canvas curtains. It may seem an odd idea...outdoor curtains,
but they are perfect for providing shade, offering protection from the wind and creating a rich and private ambiance. Of course,
adding a hand-painted design and/or colors to the canvas material would make them extra special. :)
Other ideas for patio and deck décor include
replacing tattered outdoor furniture with removable canvas cushion covers. Again, hand painted designs provides a more personal
touch, reflecting your personal décor style. To cover an ugly or damaged floor or to enhance an area, canvas rugs,
protected from direct sun, are perfect for an outdoor living space.
Great Idea! A spacious day bed placed outside (under a roof is best), potted ferns and
palms and flowering beds filling the view. Over-sized pillows thrown willy-nilly for napping or reading. Canvas, for day bed
and pillow, cushion covers, is the ideal material for outdoor use due to its durable hand and ability to machine wash. I recommend
using Scotch Guard to protect from moisture and spills.
